ROME

I know, I know
This isn't how we planned it
Our best intentions hit the ground and fell apart
I know, I know
We worked so long to save this
But now it's only suffering; just set it free to die
Our souls leave outlines on the place
We were before we lost the race
We've wallowed here for a thousand years
The sinking sand up to our ears
You've pissed upon your bleeding crown
And watched your empire crumble down
And I can see the river rising again
I know, I know
This grand design was altered
We set the fire and walked away and closed our eyes
I know, I know
We led the lamb to slaughter
We turned our backs and left the babes for wolves to find
Bring them home, and share their lives
Was on your list of things-to-do
But it's too late, they've grown and moved on
They've gotten used to life without you
They wonder why you even try
To touch them as you say goodbye
And I can see the river rising again
Is this all?
Trying to find my place in a time of need
Is this all?
Anaximenes in a world that has ceased to be...
Where the will of the new
Comes to rise once again
Around us lies the home we held so close
It is this that kills me most
But we never stopped because we once believed
In the writing in the sand

Throwaway

If the breed tears us apart
Will we still remember in our time
Instead of
Making time a casualty
Losing all the memories that we hold
Instead of
Dragging our dead weight behind
Spirits drowning in the undertow
Instead of
Blind compassion for the ones
Who locked our doors and shut out all the light
But someone set us wrong
We're only screaming at the walls
It's come too far to fall
We never leave here after all
But I can't help but look back
To where we were surrendered
And although you were forsaken
Your face I still remember (You have no idea)
But someone set us wrong
We're only screaming at the walls
It's come too far to fall
We never leave here after all
What we see is never coming...
Because somebody set us wrong

THIS MIND
© 2003, 2009 by Mark Walker
Long, faithfully,
And ever so slow
Drifting to sea
A life left this soul
Something was lost
You don't even know
Setting a sight on nowhere
This is where I go
I don't think you know this mind...
Know what is wrong
And leave it to die
Calling a dark and lonely place
There's a reason why
Apathy drowns out any light
Worth getting to know
Blow out the candles one by one
It's the end of the show
I don't think you know this mind...
Is it so hard to know what went wrong?
Is it so hard to know just what went wrong?
I light a fire on this floor just to see you
I light a fire on this floor just to see you burn
Is it so hard to know what went wrong?
I light a fire on this floor just to see you burn
Long, faithfully,
And ever so slow
Live just to see
One light lift this soul
I don't think you know this mind...
Something was lost
You don't even know
Setting a sight on nowhere
This is where I go
You don't even know
What goes on there where you are...
You don't even know

And so they say
That you and I were meant to pass this way
And cross the sea's uncertainties
That bring us to this day
When we let go of hands we hold
And fade to memory
And reminisce of those close to our hearts
And so you say
In stories told our heroes never die
And trophies made from picture shows
Give comfort with a sigh
And smiles will grow before we know our tears
No time to see you all
The time just got away
Some faces disappear
Before you have your say
So when the wind appears and blows a little colder
Feed the fire and know I'm at your shoulder
And so they say
That you and I were meant to pass this way
To revel in the smiles were shared
And drink until the dawn
And kick each other in the ass
On days we brought it on
And on our names the weeds will grow
And roses break away
So let's all raise a glass and praise this day
And we will say goodbye
Goodbye

THE GIFT
© 2006 by Mark Walker
Someone incoming, must be a falling star
From out of the sky, you fell at my feet
Where are we going? You shouldn't ask me these things
A worse-suited angel, none more than me
Humility
I've fallen at the sight of you
To say goodbye
The hardest thing that I can do
I guess what's left to say is
I sure am glad I met you
No I'll never wonder why
I sure am glad I met you
Chaotic monster, I send you spinning down
But still you followed, never to lose your faith in me
A saving grace you were to my sanity
Now keeping your distance you watch from my open door
Humility
I've fallen at the sight of you
To say goodbye
The hardest thing that I can do
I guess what's left to say is
I sure am glad I met you
No I'll never wonder why
I sure am glad I met you
I know that this takes some effort
I know it takes such a long long time
I know that we'll rise above it all
We'll make it home this time
You couldn't come at a worse time
This doesn't get any easier
And I swear that I'll try forever
I wouldn't leave you behind
I guess what's left to say is
I sure am glad I met you
No I'll never wonder why
I sure am glad I met you

SCHOOL ISN'T FUN ANYMORE
© 2002, 2009 by Mark Walker
Watching, waiting,
She sees me and she comes my way
Together, we're learning
That school can be a scary place
And as we grow, we share our laughter and our tears
The roles we play make our escape
We always said we'd change the world one day
I can't believe that it could be this way
Now school isn't fun anymore
Flushed and berated
He's burned by words that tear at his pride
Pulling his trigger
The shots ring out a sudden surprise
And blood would rain by name of
"Vengeance" or "Justice" or some damn thing
Those simple minds he'd lay to waste
We always said we'd change the world one day
I can't believe that it could be this way
Now school isn't fun anymore
It's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie
Yes, it's really happening
Take a life, not tonight, make it right
Is anybody listening?
A lifetime goes by
Her face forever etched in my mind
Don't know if it's better
To be taken or left behind
Someone once said
That everything is meant to be
Watching, waiting,
She sees me and she comes my way...
We always said we'd change the world one day
I can't believe that it could be this way
We always said we'd change the world one day
I can't believe that it could end this way
School isn't fun
This isn't fun
This isn't good
It's just no good

THE DIVINER
© 2011 by Mark Walker
I've come to tell you why
And let me demonstrate
Why no one ever feels the need
A single bearing line
That runs across the state
Disappears beyond the wake
One face will never know
Who sent us on this ride
Throwing stones at pearly gates
These markings on the course
Of where we choose to ride
Will bring those who've come for us to see
And flame deep inside you
Brick walls hold setting sons
Take what you deserve
This is only good for me
Outside there is no light and no apology
Shadows fall on your embrace
And no one is left for you to see
And flame deep inside you

What We Believe
05:42
|

On the hill there's a house overgrown with vines
Where we used to live
Fill the boxes with the pictures of who we used to be
The smiles will just break your heart
A final kiss and an embrace of those we left behind
There's no turning back now
And don't believe what they say, keep your blinders on
This is how we survive
Close your eyes, the trouble fades as long as you don't see
The victim calling your name
Well I know that we had everything
But we're alone now…
Sedatives hide the pain and get us through each day
We're all buried alive
Stimulate when it's late and gaze into the screen
In the absence of love
Steal away whenever we can if it serves us well
And leave the losers behind
Out of hate eliminate the ones who do us wrong
This is how we forgive
And all the hope we're given
I can't believe in it anymore
And all the lies we're living
I don't believe in it anymore
And now a soul is lost and left in danger
And now we know that we've become the stranger…
We lost what we believe in...

Watch out, you'd better watch out...
(What can I say?)
So unfolds the mystery
A spark of light I choose to see
And now the promise love campaigns
Leaves me only burned remains
But the time has passed with no way of showing
And all the faces disappear without knowing
From a line I cast before
Take me to forgotten shores
And I'm confined by memory
Of love untouched, I'll never see
But the time has passed with no way of showing
And all the faces disappear without knowing
I've got a train coming...
Watch out, you'd better watch out...
So for love to show I pray
And should it ever come to stay
I know I'll beat a path to hide
When in the end, love only dies
But the time has passed with no way of showing
And all the faces disappear without knowing
And if you should trip my line
I'll make it up to you next time
A bleeding heart is left to see
Just what love has done for me
But not again in my lifetime
Not again in my life
I've got a train coming...
What was here is empty now
It's showing...
(What can I say?)

AFTER THE WAR
© 2000, 2009 by Mark Walker
Oh, can you see them
Rolling in the dark
A train heads for tomorrow
Not far from where we are
A heartbeat chasing across the sky
Carves mountains from the sun
And when it comes to the end
A star for every man
Roll away
We leave here tomorrow...
A stone will stand
Where no one can see you again
Broken and scattered
Glass covers the floor
Where the nightmares and madness
Live and breathe no more
The Earth will turn and bury
Poisoned harvests where they stand
And flames that breathe in agony
Vanish in the wind
Ghosts on the horizon
See how they're smiling...
Roll away
We leave here tomorrow...
A stone will stand
Where no one can see you again
From the ashes of wheat fields
The rays of hope are born
Parting thunder and gray stone
The blinders have been shorn
Roll away
We leave here tomorrow...
A stone will stand
Where no one can see you again...
Ghosts on the horizon
See how they're smiling...
Roll away
We leave here tomorrow...
